CHARLOTTE, NC – A man has been arrested after he allegedly shot two boys while they were playing with their family pet.
The two boys were playing on a balcony with the family pet, a rabbit, while the father was cooking dinner. Police allege that’s when the suspect, Jatarius Jones, allegedly opened fire on September 22nd, hitting three different apartments and the two young boys, 11 and 5.
The 11-year-old was shot in the back of the head while the 5-year-old was shot in the side. Police from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department as well as medics rushed to the scene. Both children were rushed to an area hospital for medical treatment.
The Police advised that the 5-year-old is doing well and the 11-year-old’s condition has been improving since being shot. The older child is expected to survive but police state that he will have a long road to recovery ahead of him.
Lieutenant Alan Green, from CMPD, said in the early stages of the investigation, they had a citizen approach the officers and tell them a “small piece of information” about a potential suspect vehicle and the people that were associated with it.
Green said that while officers were working the investigation, trying unsuccessfully to locate any video surveillance, roughly an hour and a half after the shooting, a separate shooting was reported in a different division. Green stated that this shooting was a during a road rage incident.
Officers located the suspect vehicle and a vehicle pursuit ensued. Green advised the vehicle pursuit ended, however, did not state how. However, officers were able to arrest three occupants from that vehicle and seize three firearms.
Green stated that their crime analyst had been working for several hours through the night and was able to match up the vehicle being used in the road rage shooting to be the same as what was described at the scene of the shooting of the children.
Green said that they started to work on identifying the different locations that vehicle had been. Most of this was done by utilizing traffic cameras in the area which eventually led to that vehicle being at the apartment complex during the time of the shooting.
The Police advise that the only encouraging thing that happened after this outrageous act of violence against children was that they were able to take Jones into custody for the shooting. Jones was arrested for one count of firearm by felon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He is being held on no bond.
